Waterfalls in Utah

Click for the interactive map

Utah Waterfalls are just one aspect of a variety of scenery in the state’s vast and rugged expanse of desert wilderness. We’ve managed to find slot canyons, natural arches, desert oases, and even canyons with vertical sandstone cliffs. Yet surprisingly amidst this scenery are waterfalls that are tall and graceful as well as hidden and mysterious.

Like the Grand Canyon in Northern Arizona, many of the waterfalls found in this unforgiving landscape result from springs while others are of the ephemeral variety. Still, there are those waterfalls that pose as not only scenic assets but obstacles during slot canyon adventures. Further to the north, there are mountain ranges that supply its waterfalls with melting snow. In fact, snow is abundant enough in these areas that they hosted the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Among the waterfalling highlights of out trips to Utah were the majestic Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon as well as the Stewart Falls on the eastern slopes of Mt Timpanogos. Perhaps the most dramatic of the waterfalls in the deserts and canyons of Southern Utah was Lower Calf Creek Falls. Then, one of the more surprising waterfalls we’ve encountered in the beehive state were those found in or near Moab such as Mill Creek Falls (aka “Left Hand”) as well as the Faux Falls.

Indeed, ever since I first saw the alluring beauty of Utah in 2001, I have made a few repeated trips since and will continue to do so as we tend to think of Utah as possessing one of the premiere recreational places in the desert southwest.
