Waterfalls in the United States of America (USA)

Click for the interactive map

The USA Waterfalls cover a lot of real estate as it spans from coast-to-coast and even includes the detached states of Alaska and Hawaii.

We could think of the country as being divided into the American Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and the Eastern United States since each major region had distinct geographical (as well as cultural) characteristics.

American Southwest Waterfalls typically encompass some of the hottest and driest parts of the lower 48 states.  The states we tend to think of as belonging in this region include California (which has its own special page), Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and even Hawaii.

Among the waterfalling highlights found here include Havasu Falls near the Grand Canyon, Lower Calf Creek Falls in the Grand Staircase, and even other desert surprises like Darwin Falls in Death Valley. Then, there are those found in the Golden State, especially in Yosemite National Park, like Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil Fall.

The Pacific Northwest Waterfalls are abundant thanks to the very high rainfall of the region. The result of this wet climate is temperate rainforests, snow-covered mountains, volcanoes (many of which have glaciers on them), and vast evergreen forests. This region encompasses states like Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska.

Some of the waterfalling highlights of this region include Union Falls, Multnomah Falls, and Palouse Falls.

Finally, there’s the Eastern United States, which we tend to think of as anything east of the Rocky Mountains. So this encompasses the Great Plains states, the Great Lakes States, the Southern States, New England, and Mid-Atlantic States.

Among the waterfalling highlights of this region include Cumberland Falls, Tahquamenon Falls, and of course, the Granddaddy of them all – Niagara Falls.

Indeed, there’s a lot going on in the USA, and it could take a lifetime just waterfalling in this country alone! So check out our humble sampling and explore America the beautiful!
