Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Slettafossen was a waterfall that puzzled both Julie and I. When we pulled into the well-signed and relatively big car park and picnic area, we expected to see a bonafide major waterfall. Floating about in the literature (including our Adventure Roads in Norway book) were claims that the falls had anywhere between an 18m to 40m total drop over a 125m length. However, when we got out of the car and took the walkways towards the lookouts, all we could spot was a very loud series of rapids on the Rauma River where we had trouble even locating the waterfall (we generally don’t think of rapids as waterfalls). So we wondered why it had gotten such attention and infrastructure, because it really wasn’t much of a waterfall (IOHO).

In any case, we were able to view the “falls” from a bridge right above the turbulence as well as from lookouts along a short but steep path towards the underside of the bridge for a closer look. In hindsight, perhaps we were a little hasty during our disappointing visit because I saw photos in the literature showing the falls a little further downstream from the bridge we were at. Apparently, we were only on top of the falls and perhaps we should’ve explored a bit more (especially downstream) to see the actual falls itself. Oh well, maybe next time…
