Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Aegertenbach Falls (also Ägertenbachfall or Ägertenbachfälle in German; pronounced “EGG-er-tuhn-bahkh-fell-uh”) is situated right between Staubbach Falls and Murrenbach Falls and right across from Trummelbach Falls. Of all of these waterfalls, this one probably had the lightest flow and was most prone to scattering by the wind. During our visit, the scattering was so prevalent that it seemed like the waterfall would disappear long before reaching the ground. Sometimes, the waterfall was even blown upwards!

Like Murrenbach Falls, this waterfall was pretty much a look-but-don’t-touch affair as we couldn’t get close to it. However, it did provide a nice backdrop to several of the photos of the Lauterbrunnen Valley that we were able to take (see the top photo below). Thus, it was photogenic when used in conjunction with other scenic subjects.

Moreover, we were able to see this waterfall accompanied by either Staubbach Falls or Murrenbach Falls or sometimes by both! Perhaps that was why we got the sense that hardly anyone knew this waterfall’s name.

In fact, we certainly didn’t know about its name until we walked the 2km trail between Trummelbach Falls and the Talstation Schilthornbahn (i.e. cable car station going to Gimmelwald) where we saw a sign besides its watercourse giving us that information. Without that sign, I could imagine this waterfall could’ve very easily blended in with the numerous other waterfalls that either didn’t have a name or lacked signage or literature that would’ve helped us identify it by name.

That sign, by the way, also told us that Aegertenbach Falls was 261m in height, and that apparently its stream was involved in the first use of electric lights within Lauterbrunnen Valley. In addition, the sign also mentioned that the lights were originally meant for wealthy British guests.
