The Alta Waterfall was what I was calling this conspicuous waterfall that kept showing itself to us when we were making the drive between the Alta sentrum and the Alten Lodge, where we were staying at.

To my knowledge, this waterfall didn’t have a formal name, but I believe it flowed on the Borrasbekken (or Porhaanjoki in Sami).

Context of the Alta Waterfall

I only came up with this name because it was visible from the eastern end of the town of Alta.

Unfortunately, for such a conspicuous waterfall, there didn’t seem to be a pullout or a convenient place to view it aside from having a passenger take a picture from the car.

We did explore a side road that started from the south side of the bridge over the Gaiddosjohka, which led to Seterdalen.

The road appeared to be more of a farm road for locals, and it was in pretty bad shape.

But the photos you see on this page pretty much came from that road.

Other than that, there’s really not much more to this waterfall, which probably acts more like a scenic backdrop than a particular attraction worth stopping for.

The Alta Waterfall resides in the Alta Municipality. For information or inquiries about the area as well as current conditions, visit their website.

The Alta Waterfall pretty much sat on the east side of the town of Alta.

Using the E6 bridge over the Altaelva as a landmark, we drove about 10.5km further east on the E6 before reaching the bridge over Gaiddosjohka.

We were able to view the waterfall from the bridge as well as a little further north beyond the bridge.

We also drove on the Seterdalen Road, which left the E6 right before the bridge, where we drove an additional kilometer.

For some geographical context, Alta was 130km (about 1.5 hours drive) north of Kautokeino, 164km (over 2 hours drive) east of Storslett, 207km (about 3 hours drive) southwest of Honningsvåg, 393km (under 6 hours drive without a ferry) east of Tromsø, 462km (about 6 hours drive) west of Kirkenes, and 482km (under 7 hours drive) north of Narvik.
