About Waterfall Djupivogur
The waterfall near Djupivogur (Djúpivogur) is how I’m identifying this obscure waterfall that grabbed our attention as we were making the very long drive on the Ring Road between Egilsstaðir through Höfn (pronounced like “hup” and rhymes with cup) and eventually to Skaftafell National Park. Given that this was almost a 6-hour drive through mostly featureless landscapes (except for some abandoned farms), we really got the sense that life in this part of the country must be very difficult. So that was probably the biggest reason why we noticed and remembered this waterfall pretty vividly.
Actually, when we were weaving our way between mountains on an unsealed part of the Ring Road, that was when we saw this waterfall in the distance. And since we were rather eager to get out of the car to stretch our legs in front of a waterfall, we took the trouble to find a road that would lead us closer to the falls.
The challenge was that there were no signs indicating this waterfall was anything interesting. Then, we eventually realized that the road wouldn’t get us any closer to the falls than what you see in the photos on this page. So it was really nothing more than a roadside stop, though if we really wanted to, perhaps we could’ve scrambled across the brown shrubs to get even closer to the falls (though it looked far enough to be a non-trivial hike and scramble; perhaps 30 minutes or more).
Finally, when I looked at my old map files and notes, apparently, I labeled the waypoint for this falls as Hamarsafoss. However, I am unsure whether this name is legitimate or not, nor was I even sure how I came up with that name for the waypoint.
