Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

The Petite Cascade de Tendon was really more of a short series of smaller-drop cascades. While it didn’t quite possess the size of the neighboring Grande Cascade de Tendon, this one seemed to have more of an intimate feel to it as we were able to relax by the spray from the falls, let our daughter play in the water for a little bit, and soak in the overall ambience (that is, unless someone decides to light up a cigarette and pollute the air with the toxic second-hand smoke).

From the car park (see directions below), it only took a few steps to reach a bench and overlook of the attractive cascades below. After soaking in the views, we then took a descending trail that took us right across the base of the falls so we could view it from a variety of angles.

We didn’t continue past the bridge to continue the trail, but according to the signage, it would have led another 8 hours to the city center of Epinal. Going in the other direction, we also could have taken a 1km trail to reach the Grande Cascade de Tendon in another 30 minutes.

Overall, we spent about 45 minutes away from the car as our time was cut short by a couple of people who were chain smoking by the waterfall. Aside from that, it definitely recharged my batteries to continue the drive to charming city of Colmar from Luxembourg City.

Our visit to the Petite Cascade de Tendon was part of a long drive from Luxembourg City, Luxembourg to Freiburg, Germany via Colmar, France. We’ll only describe the drive from Epinal or Colmar. Details of this drive was described in the Grande Cascade de Tendon page.

The important thing to remember about the Petite Cascade’s access was that it was less than 2km to the west of the turnoff to the Chemin des Cascades (the one leading to the Grande Cascade) or 1.6km west of the Hotel de la Grande Cascade along the D11 Road. Like with the Grande Cascade, there were white signs giving us the heads up to take the correct turnoff on the left.

If you’re heading west on the D11 Road, the left turn onto the signed turnoff is a sharp turn. If you’re heading east, then you’ll reach the signed turnoff for the Petite Cascade before reaching the Chemin des Cascade another 2km further on the D11.

For some geographical context, Epinal was about 73km (under an hour drive) south of Nancy, 93km (over 1.5 hours drive) west of Colmar, and 193km (over 2 hours drive) south of Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. Meanwhile, Colmar was 74km (about an hour drive) south of Strasbourg and 51km (under an hour drive) west of Freiburg, Germany.
