Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Klukkufoss (meaning “Clock Falls” or “Bell Falls”) was a waterfall fed by the meltwaters of the Snæfellsjökull Glacier (pronounced “SNAYE-fells-yuk-ul”) dominating the west end of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Underlying the falls were basalt-like columns that were twisted and bent more or less along the trajectory of the water. Such a characteristic would typically occur where lava (fire) and ice (the glacier) meet, and with the Snæfellsjökull sitting atop a volcano, this observation made a lot of sense.

We treated this as more of a short detour and stop (up with Eysteinsdalur; “Island Rock Valley”?) while we explored the rest of the peninsula given the fine day we were having. However, getting to the falls was a bit more nontrivial than what we expected.

First off, we had to drive a rough access road, which was doable by passenger cars, but must be done slowly given how rocky and bumpy it was. After the signposted trailhead to the waterfall, the road became more of a 4wd-only route, which would eventually lead up to one of the arms of the glacier. However, we didn’t go past the trailhead for the waterfall so we can’t really say more about what was beyond.

Next, I did a brief uphill 15-20 minute hike over some rocky terrain to get a better look at the falls. When I turned around as I was headed back to the car, I saw pretty nice panoramas in the direction of Hellissandur as well as the Atlantic Ocean.

As for touring the rest of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this waterfall was merely the first major stop beyond Hellissandur as we made a loop starting and ending in Ólafsvík. Along the way, we checked out the black sand beach and moving stones at Djúpalónssandur as well as the giant sea arches at Arnarstapi.
