Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Wainuta Falls is a gorgeous 30m waterfall in the Luva Gorge.

In order to see this waterfall, we had to take a kayak and river tour onto the Lower Navua River within the Luva Gorge (or Wainikoroiluva). This tour also included a bit of an adventurous drive into the Namosi Highlands where we visited an authentic Fijian village called Nakavika Village, and we even partook in a welcoming ceremony where we were greeted by the village chief while also having a ceremonial drink of kava.

As for the water part of the tour, we kayaked some distance downstream before we stopped the kayak at the proper riverbank. Then, we did a short 15-minute walk right to the base of the waterfall where some of the tour participants as well as the guide himself swam.

The way we did this excursion was by booking a tour with Rivers Fiji (called “A Day on the Luva”). This tour provided all the kayaking equipment as well as all the transport as they picked us up from the Hideaway Resort when we did this trip. The kayaking was very easy because they provided very robust inflatable kayaks made for beginners. Thus, first timers like Julie and I were able to do it.

The overall experience here was so educational and interactive that we considered this to be one the highlights of our Fiji trip back in 2005.
