Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

The Other Moorea Waterfalls besides the two main ones behind the town of Afareaitu are what I’m devoting this particular page for.

For all intents and purposes, I’ve spotted the majority of these waterfalls (most of which I’d imagine are ephemeral) on the east-facing slopes of the island of Moorea. However, there were a handful of light flowing waterfalls coming down the lower slopes of Mt Rotui and spilling towards Opunohu Bay, except we didn’t stop to photo those.

I recalled that on our first trip to Moorea in the Dry Season of 2002, we didn’t even notice most of these waterfalls. So it could be that they are primarily Wet Season phenomena. But whatever the case may be, I thought they’re worth noting since they do seem to add a little life to the sharp mountains of this island that is said to be older than the larger Tahiti Island.

Even with all that said, we might have visited the island under rather unusual circumstances as the remnants of Cyclone Evan (that apparently caused some major damage in Fiji broke up and sent a good chunk of its moisture eastwards towards Tahiti! The result was we got several consecutive days of torrential rains plus some lightning and thunder to boot!
