Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Hoysteinfossen (Høysteinfossen; “HUHY-styen-foss-un”; meaning High Stone Falls) and the Bodalen Waterfalls (Bødalen) were my waterfalling excuses to talk about a little detour that Julie and I took up the narrow Bødal Valley, which was a side valley of Lodal Valley.

Høysteinfossen and Huldrefossen just upstream of it were the only officially named waterfalls that we encountered, which were right on the river Bødalselva as they tumbled in multiple disjointed drops.

There were also a few other tall waterfalls tumbling down the Bødal Valley, which was why I added the title “Bødalen Waterfalls” to encompass them as well.

I believe the real reason why there was this very narrow unpaved access (that was barely wide enough to fit our rental car) as well as a car park and trail at the road’s end was that the walking track ultimately went by a mountain hut called Bødalssætra en route to the glacier Bødalsbreen higher up the mountain.

Like most of the other glacier arms we saw in this part of the country, this glacier also belonged to the vast Jostedalsbreen Glacier.

Julie and I didn’t do any hiking on this detour as all the waterfalls were pretty much right besides the narrow road.

By the way, the narrowness and steepness of this road was definitely a little on the scary side.

I recalled that on our way down, we had to squeeze by someone who was coming up.

We were very lucky that there was a very tiny space that we coordinated our passing to occur at.

Otherwise, I’m not sure how we could have gotten past each other without someone having to back up on this single-lane road had it been anywhere else in Bødalen.
