About Five Mile Creek Falls (“Waterfall Walk”)
Five Mile Creek Falls was a waterfall that I didn’t know its name because the signage at this falls said “Waterfall Walk” and nothing more.
It wasn’t until after the trip when I indirectly associated verbiage from a tramping board (who had identified it with this name) with our experience as well as some local New Zealand maps did I finally proceed with referring to this waterfall by its creek’s name.

While Julie and I were racing to get from Christchurch to Greymouth then heading north to try to catch a sunset at the Pancake Rocks, we noticed the aforementioned highway sign near Lewis Pass.
That pretty much got us to stop and briefly check it out before continuing on (despite our rush).
This stop certainly made us cut it real close as it was already late in the afternoon on a sunny day.
Under more normal circumstances, I’d imagine this would have been an opportunity to break up the driving while getting a photo op in there.
So we stopped the car at the pullout next to the sign, then in the interest of time, Julie stayed behind while I rushed my way up the 10-minute walk (in each direction; 20 minutes return).
It took surprisingly more time than I was hoping for because the walk was all uphill on the way there.
There was a small cascade near the pullout before I was getting a real cardio workout in my haste.
Eventually, after about 7 minutes, I saw the impressively tall 40m waterfall, which was very thin and it barely fit into my camera’s frame since I was so close to it.
Meanwhile, the foliage around me conspired to block the views at every other viewing position except for right in front of it.
The photo you see at the top of this page was my best effort with my camera at the time.
It took me about 5 more minutes to return to the pullout since it was all downhill going in that direction.
