Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Avalanche Creek Falls was really my waterfalling excuse to talk about the Avalanche Peak Track even though Julie and I didn’t get the opportunity to do it during our November 2004 trip to New Zealand.

In fact, we didn’t even have to hike much of that track to get a decent view of this waterfall.

To give you an idea of how easy it was, we merely had to walk behind the DOC building (see directions below) before reaching a signed fork where we then went right and took the five-minute spur track to the lookout that yielded the photo you see above.

It was said that this waterfall was 80m tall, but the main drop seemed to be much less than that.

However, we noticed there were more cascades higher up the mountain so perhaps the larger height figure pertained to the overall cumulative drop.

In case you’re wondering about the Avalanche Peak Track, it was said to be 3-4 hours tramp (6-8 hours return) to even get up to the exposed peak that would only be doable in fine weather.

We were told that there had been many fatalities on this track due to people getting caught in the exposure, especially in light of the South Island’s fickle weather.

Perhaps the next time we’re fortunate to come to Arthur’s Pass, we’d try to time a visit for good weather and spend the day doing this track to see what the hype is all about.
