Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Kirkjufellsfoss (“Church Mountain Falls”) was a short but very well-situated waterfall near the distinctive Kirkjufell mountain on the north side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. We happened to see this waterfall while we were rushing to catch our ferry ride in Stykkisholmur from Ólafsvík. I’m sure it would’ve been nice to chill out a bit longer and experience this falls in other ways, but because time was of the essence, we couldn’t linger.

I found this waterfall particularly attractive given the reflections in the inlet the morning that we showed up. So as we were conflicted with staying or rushing to ensure we’d meet our ferry in time (or risk missing it completely and have to wait until late afternoon), we opted to stay just long enough to get the photos you see on this page.

However, I knew had we given ourselves more time here, we could’ve found other ways experience this falls, and sure enough, I noticed pictures in the literature (even on Sportcenter one night when the Icelandic soccer team was doing well in Euro 2016) demonstrating that we could’ve seen the falls together with Kirkjufell mountain from right besides the waterfall itself looking towards the fjord. In order to do that, we could’ve taken one of the side roads that would’ve led us right to the bridge above the waterfall. Maybe one of these days, we’ll come back here and give it the attention it should’ve gotten in the first place.

We found this waterfall about 23km east of Ólafsvík along Route 54. I believe there were a handful of roadside pullouts we were able to take advantage of, but as mentioned before there was also a turnoff onto a looping road leading even closer to the falls (which we didn’t take due to time constraints).

For some context, Ólafsvík was 64km (about an hour drive) west of the ferry town of Stykkishólmur, 118km (90 minutes drive) northwest of Borgarnes, and 187km (2.5 hours drive) north of Reykjavik.
