Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Grundarfoss was an impressive plunging waterfall near the town of Grundarfjörður. Like with our situation with Kirkjufellsfoss just a short distance to the west from here, this one looked like a real nice one to get close to in order to better appreciate its power and size. Unfortunately, in our haste not to miss our ferry to the Westfjords that morning, we couldn’t chance it! And thus we ended up with another example of how haste makes waste.

Even under these circumstances, as you can see from the photos on this page, we still got beautiful views of the falls and backing mountains. And I’m sure had we been able to take more time here, we would’ve realized that there was an access road that would’ve taken us even closer to the bottom of the falls (where there might have also been a companion waterfall next to it but not visible from the angle we saw the falls from the main road).

According to my Icelandic dictionary, the word “grund” means “field” or “plain.” And so that would make the name of the town suggest there was a fjord by a plain or field. Sure enough, we saw a large green pasture with cows grazing between the main road and the falls. Those cows provided a sense of scale showing how big this waterfall was.
