Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Hooker Falls was the first of three waterfalls on the Little River we visited (the other two being Triple Falls and High Falls) while touring DuPont State Forest.

What this falls lacked in height (probably about 15ft tall) it definitely made up for with its width and classically rectangular shape. Julie tends to be partial towards the wider waterfalls so this one definitely was her type. Plus, the Autumn colors surrounding this falls certainly added to its scenic allure.

We were able to access this waterfall from the Hooker Falls parking lot (see directions below), where we followed a short 1/4-mile trail (or 0.3 miles depending on which sign you look at) that offered us profile views of the falls from above it as well as the frontal views you see in the rest of the photos on this page. The trail was wide enough to lead me to believe that it used to be a road (possibly a logging road?) and perhaps some restoration work going on by the banks of the Little River due to soil erosion (probably due to the clearing of vegetation from logging) might support this theory.

It’s said that the falls was named after Edmund Hooker who ran a mill downstream from the falls back in the late 1800s. Thus, we’ve seen in the literature that this falls was also called Mill Shoal Falls.

Given the easy and short trail, we were probably one of at least a half-dozen people with DSLRs who brought a tripod for those long silky shots.
