Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Aunt Sarahs Falls (or Aunt Sarah’s Falls) was a struggling 90ft waterfall when I made a visit in mid-June. Apparently, it was a case of bad timing with this waterfall as I had probably come too late in the season to see it flowing well.

To paint a picture of how well it can flow, an elderly local who had pulled over at a neighboring shoulder saw me photographing the falls. When I was about to head back across the street to my parked rental car, the local whistled me over to him and explained to me that I should’ve come in the Spring when its spray would’ve easily soaked the neighboring Route 14 bridge!

All things considered, it was still a charming waterfall in its own right, and its location just outside the charming town of Montour Falls certainly must’ve helped in the quaint and charming department. The only real difficulty with this waterfall was having to cross Route 14 safely by foot (which can be dangerous given how quickly cars can zoom by here) since I had parked the car at a small lot across the highway from the falls itself.

From the town of Montour Falls, we headed north on Route 14 for barely a half-mile north of Main St. We spotted the falls just north of the bridge going over the creek where Ayres St and Route 14 merged. So we parked the car in a large pullout area on the east side of Route 14.

For directions on getting to Montour Falls from Ithaca, see the She-qua-ga Falls (Montour Falls) page.

For geographical context, Ithaca was about 156 miles (under 3 hours drive) east of Buffalo, 167 miles (3 hours drive) west of Albany, or 233 miles (4.5 hours drive) northwest of New York City.
