Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Both Newell Falls and Sherrard Falls were surprise roadside waterfalls as we wound our way along the curvy roads of the Dorrigo Mountains. In fact, we were looking for Crystal Shower Falls when we happened to stumble upon these waterfalls after we had missed the turnoff leading to Crystal Shower Falls.

The first waterfall we encountered heading east was Sherrard Falls. It turned out that there wasn’t a safe place to stop the car and admire this waterfall so some of the photos we took of this falls were from inside the car as we were approaching it. Our place to U-turn on the Waterfall Way highway (and double back to Crystal Shower Falls) didn’t happen until we stumbled upon Newell Falls just 1km further downhill. That was where there was a small car park as well as some signage and an opportunity to admire the falls without getting in the way of traffic.

In any case, it has been said that these waterfalls become prone to Waterfall Way road closures during times of flooding. That was because the road passed over bridges traversing the creeks of both waterfalls. Finally, Julie and I did manage to find an informal small pullout west of Sherrard Falls where we walked alongside the road (note we were essentially walking on the road’s shoulder as it wasn’t designated for pedestrians) until we saw the view of the falls you see pictured at the top of this page. That said, realized that walking on a narrow road with blind turns was a risky proposition, and we definitely had to be mindful of traffic on the Waterfall Way.

Sherrard Falls was sandwiched between the turnoff on Dome Rd for Crystal Shower Falls and Newell Falls along the Waterfall Way (Hwy 78). It was about about 7km south of the town centre of Dorrigo to Sherrard Falls. Newell Falls was another 1.1km downhill (southeast) along the Waterfall Way.

For context, Dorrigo was 64km (an hour drive) west of Coffs Harbour. Coffs Harbour was 391km south of Brisbane, 157km north of Port Macquarie, and 537km (6 hours drive) north of Sydney.
