Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Little Millstream Falls seemed to us to be a convergence of a handful of cascading waterfalls. I noticed at least a trio of segmented cascades during our visit in May 2008. I’m sure depending on the waterflow, I could have seen more waterfalls during the Wet Season and fewer during the Dry Season. In any case, I took a track that gently descended towards the large plunge pool at the base of the waterfalls while affording us contextual views of the falling waters. When I reached the bottom of the track, the terrain got a bit muddier and rougher, and I didn’t quite make it all the way to the waterfalls themselves. There was some foliage that had hairs on them, and I didn’t want to guess wrong about them being the neurotoxic stinging plants. Nonetheless, there did appear to be access to the plunge pool, which I’d imagine would be a good place for a swim to cool off from the tropical heat.

Unlike the more famous and developed Millstream Falls, there was a noticeable lack of development at this waterfall. Thus, it wasn’t surprising to me that I was the only one at the falls during my brief visit. And I’d imagine that given such relative obscurity, there was probably a higher likelihood of seeing platypus even though that wasn’t the case on my visit.

Overall, I spent about 20 minutes away from the car, but that included a fair bit of trail running to keep Julie from waiting for me for too long. I didn’t linger around other than to take photos, but I very well could have spent more time to bask in the relative solitude as well as a refreshing swim.

From the Kennedy Hwy (Hwy 1) at Ravenshoe (that’s “ravens hoe” not “raven shoe”), we turned left (south) onto Tully Falls Rd then continued for about 500m. Then, we turned right onto Wooroora Rd, where we then followed this road for the next 1.5km to the turnoff on our right for Millstream Falls National Park. From there, we followed the signs to the car park and trailhead.

Ravenshoe was about 25km southwest of Millaa Millaa along a combination of the Palmerston Hwy and Kennedy Hwy. Alternatively, it was about 28km between Millaa Millaa and Ravenshoe along the combination of Hwy 25 (Millaa Millaa-Malanda Rd and East Evenlyn Rd) and Hwy 1 (Kennedy Hwy). Going this latter route, we saw an impressive wind farm that I believe is called the Atherton Wind Farm.

For additional geographical context, Ravenshoe was 85km (over an hour drive) west of Innisfail and 118km (2 hours drive) south of Cairns.
