About Cedar Creek Falls
Cedar Creek Falls (sometimes known as just Cedar Falls) was our waterfalling excuse to explore the famously beautiful white sand islands and reefs of the Whitsundays. Unfortunately, this waterfall was dry for all intents and purposes during our visit in May 2008 (I recalled we might have heard a trickle as it barely had water). This was despite some sporadic rains that the area had received during our visit, so I’d imagine that this waterfall would only be flowing during the Wet Season and it wouldn’t last many days after the end of the monsoonal downpours. Under the conditions that we saw the falls, this was really more of a swimming hole than waterfall attraction.
That said, if we were to visit during the Australian Summer, we would obviously have to contend with the increased likelihood of encountering some fatally-poisonous organisms of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem such as the box jellyfish, irikanji, blue-ringed octopus, and more. It would definitely be a time to be wearing lycra suits with no exposed skin if going in the water, which would be a must since we’d imagine no one comes here without experiencing the Finding Nemo-like qualities of the reefs here.
Anyhow, the falls was essentially a roadside waterfall as there was no hiking necessary to access it. As you can see from the photos on this page, getting a satisfactory waterfalling experience was more about timing and circumstance than it was about physical exertion.
The closest beach to the falls was Conway Beach, but Airlie Beach (where we were staying) was within a reasonable 20-minute or so drive. Proserpine was the main town along the Bruce Hwy (A1) where we had to turn off and head towards the Cedar Creek Falls as well as the Whitsunday access town at Airlie Beach.
From the Bruce Hwy (A1) in Proserpine, we had to turn right onto Shute Harbour Rd. The turnoff was a short distance north of the main part of Proserpine. Then, we would have to drive about 5.5km along Shute Harbour Rd before turning right onto Conway Rd. We followed Conway Rd for about 8.5km before a sign had us keep left onto an unsealed access road (Saltwater Creek Rd, I believe) that took us to Cedar Creek Falls Rd, which we then took the final 900m to its end at the falls itself.
Coming from Airlie Beach, we had to drive about 18km south on Shute Harbour Rd before turning left onto Conway Rd. Then, we followed the directions as above to the falls.
Proserpine is about 460km (5 hours drive) north of Rockhampton and about 265km (3 hours drive) south of Townsville along the Bruce Hwy (A1).
