Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Cameron Falls was a light-flowing waterfall that didn’t seem to have a whole lot of life left in it during our visit to Tamborine Mountain (in the Gold Coast Hinterland) in May 2008. Our visit happened to be on Mother’s Day so the place seemed busier than what we had expected. Sharing the experience with us was a large group of senior citizens that were up bright and early to do the walking tracks here, including the one taking in the falls. In any case, Julie and I thought this waterfalling experience offered more in the way of panoramas than the waterfall itself.

We began by embarking on a 1.3km walking track that immediately started off with an attractive panorama between trees towards the low lands to the east in the direction of the southernmost suburbs of Brisbane as well as the northernmost suburbs of the Gold Coast. We then followed a well-signed and fairly well-developed walking track under the shade of plenty of forest cover. The track eventually took us to the top of Cameron Falls (crossing a bridge over Sandy Creek) where shortly thereafter, we ended up at a lookout showing us the view of the falls you see at the top of this page as well as an uninterrupted panorama further downstream. Overall, we spent a little over an hour to complete this hike, including all the picture-taking and the relaxing at the panoramic views.

Incidentally, Tamborine National Park (at least the Witches Falls section of the park) was Queensland’s first national park, which was gazetted in 1908. This was to protect what was left of the rainforest and its native species, including some forms of timber which were amongst the resources sought after by early settlers for logging.

From the Gold Coast, take the M1 (Pacific Motorway) north to the Oxenford-Southport Rd exit. Then, turn left onto the Old Pacific Hwy (Hwy 95) which then would become Tamborine-Oxenford Rd. Follow the Route 95 for a little over 22km to Geissmann Dr on the left (at this point, Route 95 would be on Eagle Heights Rd). Follow Geissmann Dr for just under a kilometre, then turn right onto Main St. Follow Main St, which will eventually become Knoll Rd, and follow this road to the turnoff for Cameron Falls on the left in about 1.7km.

Overall, this drive was around 43km taking us about an hour from Surfers Paradise, which was a resorty area by the beach within the Gold Coast.

As for more geographical context, Gold Coast was 78km (about an hour drive) south of Brisbane and 94km (over an hour drive) north of Byron Bay.
