Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Bakers Creek Falls was an unexpected stop for us as a signpost on the Armidale-Dorrigo Road (aka the Waterfall Way or Hwy 78) caught our attention. It was really a series of cascades, but it only trickling during our visit in May 2008. I guess there was a reason why this waterfall didn’t seem to get a whole lot of fanfare (it definitely wasn’t a waterfall we knew about as we were planning for our trip). But I’m sure it would be a worthwhile diversion under better waterflow conditions.

In addition to the waterfall, the gorge it was in was also scenic. The lookout for both the gorge and the waterfall was only a few paces from where we parked the car. There didn’t seem to be any obvious access to get closer to the waterfall though given the lack of waterflow, we probably wouldn’t have done it even if there was such a track available. Further exacerbating the disappointment of the visit on the morning we showed up, half the scene was in shadow so our photos didn’t turn out in this place either.

As alluded to in the description above, we chanced upon the signed turnoff for the falls roughly 27km east of Armidale and roughly 10km west of Wollomombi Falls on the Armidale-Dorrigo Road (also referred to as The Waterfall Way or Hwy 78).

Once on the spur road (Old Hillgrove Rd), we proceeded south for just under 2km until we got to a picnic area (though it wasn’t explicitly clear the falls were there until I get out of the car and took a look since there wasn’t a sign labeling this stop as the waterfall stop).

Bakers Creek Falls was around 30 minutes drive east of Armidale or 163km (over 2 hours drive) west of Coffs Harbour. Coffs Harbour was 391km south of Brisbane, 157km north of Port Macquarie, and 537km (6 hours drive) north of Sydney.
