About Catarata de Corontachaca
Catarata de Corontachaca was a pleasant waterfall surprise (at least one we didn’t expect to see on our trip) sitting several minutes west of the town of Pedro Ruiz. I was told the falls has a 90m drop, but I’m more apt to believe its most visible tier (assuming there was more than one drop) was more of a 30m (around 90ft) drop judging how Julie compared to the falls when she stood in front of it.
There was a short path that allowed us to walk right up to its base. But for all intents and purposes, this was a roadside waterfall. In fact, it was clearly visible from the road (see photo at the top of this page). But, for once on this trip, we didn’t have to go trekking to access a waterfall.
I guess on our trip, this kind of made up for our inability to see Catarata de Ahuashiyacu (due to road construction) near Tarapoto at the doorstep of the Amazon.
It turned out that we ended up going this way and seeing Catarata de Corontachaca because we were making the long drive to the city of Chiclayo in order to catch a local flight to Lima, which in turn would’ve have put us on a red-eye flight back to LA. The weather ended up being very stormy with some flooded sections and road washouts that made us wonder if we were going to make it. Fortunately, our skillful driver managed to make it through the obstacle course, but that was a real close call!
