Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Waterfall at Foss may sound redundant, but what I’m talking about here pertained to a waterfall that we saw on our map labeled as “Foss” facing the Arnarfjörður in the remote Westfjords of northwestern Iceland. It turned out that Foss pertained to a farm that was here, and this waterfall happened to be one of several waterfalls on Fossdalur (“waterfall valley”), which could’ve been done as a one-way 15km hike from Foss to Krossholt (or vice-versa). I guess it would only be fitting considering the place names here had foss this or foss that.

The waterfall pictured here was the only waterfall we captured here since we didn’t plan on doing the long hike into Fossdalur (actually, we didn’t even know this was the place to do that hike). So the difficulty rating reflected that we essentially treated this as a roadside attraction even though there could’ve been so much more to this writeup. The scenic rating also could’ve changed drastically had we partook in the hike as well, especially since I had read after the fact that there was another taller waterfall just a short climb above the falls that we saw.

So given that we can’t say a whole lot more about this excursion other than what could have been, I hope you can at least find this page useful in finding where the hike begins and ends, and then you can be surprised by what you see if you end up hiking into Fossdalur.
