Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Double Falls was the finale of our tour of ten waterfalls in Silver Falls State Park. Given that we were pretty waterfall saturated at this point, its surprisingly graceful two-tiered drop (true to its name) made it a fitting way to reinvigorate us on the hike back out to the car park.

The upper tier fell in profile to our viewing position on the trail before the stream twisted and fell over the much taller tier. It had a cumulative height of 178ft though its entirety was probably best seen from the Trail of Ten Falls junction as opposed to the spur that took us closer to the falls. That said, the spur trail led us to views of the lower main drop without as much foliage blocking our line of sight.

The quick 0.1-mile spur to get closer to the falls had also let us feel its spray. It was too bad the weather was so bad by the time we made it to this waterfall because we could’ve easily envisioned ourselves chilling out in front of it while taking our time taking long exposure photos. Instead, we were a little hasty in our picture taking to limit the likelihood of water damage.

This waterfall was also very close to Lower North Falls so it too had the distinction of probably being one of the furthest waterfalls from any trailhead in Silver Falls State Park.

We managed to walk all the way to this waterfall (in the rain), which was about 1.2 miles each way (2.4 miles round trip). It sat just upstream from the Lower North Falls.

We hiked to this waterfall from the car park for Winter Falls. See that page for driving directions.

As for the geographical context, Portland was 42 miles (an hour drive) north of Silverton and 47 miles (also an hour drive) north of Salem.
