About Geroldsau Waterfall
The Geroldsau Waterfall was one of the more obscure waterfalls that we’ve encountered in our waterfalling tour of Germany. In this particular case, we hardly saw any fanfare nor signage letting us know of its existence whether in the field or even during our pre-trip research.
So what compelled us to take the trouble to find it?
Well, it happened to be very close to the town of Baden Baden, and so it was kind of our excuse to give the town a try even though we suspected that it was more catered towards adults than it was for a family with a child.
The way we did the waterfall was to go on a short walk from a pullout that was only 150m from the lookout for the falls itself (see directions below). After parking the car, we walked about 50m or so towards a small sign that said “Zum Wasserfall”. Then, we descended towards an area by the Grobbach Creek where there was a shelter, a bridge, and that aforementioned lookout.
This was about the extent of our brief visit as we were happily basking in the tranquility of the scene before us. However, the second hand cigarette smoke from a family that was chilling out in the shelter during our visit all but ensured that our visit would be brief.
There were other trails that went both above the brink of the Geroldsau Waterfall as well as another that continued further downstream across the bridge by the shelter. All told, we only spent less than a half-hour away from the car, but it easily could have been longer or shorter depending on your mood.
Finally, I’ve also seen this waterfall referred to as the Geroldsauer Waterfall as well as Geroldsauer Wasserfall or Geroldsau Wasserfall in German.
The nearest town to the Geroldsau Waterfall was Baden Baden. So we’ll describe the driving directions from there. We’ll also describe the directions from Oppenau since that was how we ultimately did it via the scenic route through Allerheiligen.
From Baden Baden, we would drive south on the B500 for around 5km until getting to the town of Geroldsau. There is a pretty obscure turnoff on the left to get onto the Geroldsauer Straße, which was a narrow and nearly single-lane road that followed along the Grobbach Creek.
Overall, this drive took about 10-15 minutes.
From Oppenau, we took the scenic route along the Allerheiligen Straße past the Allerheiligen Waterfalls before keeping right at a fork shortly after passing by the Klosterruine Allerheiligen, and eventually joining up with the B500 at Ruhestein. Turning left onto the B500, we’d then continue north on this road for about 28km until we’d arrive at the turnoff for the Geroldsauer Straße on the right in the town of Geroldsau roughly 600m past the Waldparkplatz parking lot (which was an alternate trailhead for the Geroldsau Waterfall but it was a 1.4km hike in each direction from there).
Then, we’d follow the Geroldsauer Straße to the pullout as described above.
The drive from the Allerheiligen Monastery Ruins to the Geroldsau Waterfall took us around 45 minutes. It would have been about an hour from Oppenau going this route.
For geographical context, Baden Baden was 43km (over 30 minutes drive) south of Karlsruhe, 52km (over 30 minutes drive) north of Offenburg, 59km (about 45 minutes drive) north of Strasbourg, France, 61km (about 45 minutes drive) north of Oppenau, 90km (about an hour drive) south of Heidelberg, 109km (about an hour drive) north of Freiburg im Breisgau, and 110km (over an hour drive) west of Stuttgart.
