About Spyke Falls
Spyke Falls was actually a waterfall we didn’t expect to see on our St Lucia trip. It was introduced to us by a guide (Peter Simon) who also guided us to Enbas Saut Falls. It’s allegedly the tallest waterfall on the island at somewhere over 100m, but as you can tell from the photo, it was difficult to get a decent view of the entire falls (which were more like cascades) in one shot. There were also more lower tiers below our viewing spot.
The trail itself was quite primitive as it weaved through some dense vegetation before climbing up steeply along what looked like a gully. If it was raining, I doubted that we would have been able to access the waterfall as this gully surely would have been very muddy and ultra-slippery. Moreover, if the falls were pumping, it might have been extremely difficult to even get a satisfying view of the falls since the viewing spot for the photo you see at the top of this page was essentially on the lip of one of the waterfall’s leaps.
Although the length of this hike and scramble wasn’t very long (on the order of 15 minutes or so), it was steep and full of hazards. Therefore, I bumped up the difficulty rating to reflect that. Anyways, the bottom line is that this excursion really depended on the conditions. We were fortunate to have sunny weather when we did it in November 2008.
Access to the falls began around Fond St Jacques, which was 5km east of the town of Soufriere. It was not signposted and we really had to rely on our guide to even know where to stop the car. Apparently, the way to the waterfall crossed through private land because we were asked to pay around $5 EC per person before accessing the waterfall.
To give you some context, the drive from Gros Islet to Soufriere was about 54km (taking us about 90 minutes). It was another half-hour of driving very slowly towards the falls. Gros Islet was on the opposite side of the island from the airport some 65km away (or 90 minutes by vehicle). The flight from the Miami International Airport to the Saint Lucia Airport was on the order of 4 hours.
