Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Thunder Falls was a waterfall I noticed across Moose Lake while motoring along Hwy 16. I almost dismissed this waterfall as one of those dime-a-dozen cascades we would normally chance upon while driving long distances in mountainous areas, but I couldn’t help but think to myself that this falls did seem pretty big for such a miscellaneous cascade.

Then, when I noticed a signpost identifying this falls, that sealed the deal for me so I doubled back and made sure to photograph and document the falls on this page.

While driving along the highway, when I saw a sign identifying the lake fronting the falls as Moose Lake, I was really hoping to see the elusive moose grazing somewhere easily seen along this lake. That would’ve given me more of a reason to linger here longer. But I guess I was hoping against hope that the highway traffic wouldn’t freak them out. I really wonder how often moose would be spotted here…

The viewpoint for the falls is roughly 60km west of Jasper along Hwy 16 right across from Moose Lake. Or, it’s 25km east of the Overlander Falls car park.

You really have to pay attention to the mountains on the other side of Moose Lake, but if you’re driving and don’t have a passenger to help out, you’re probably better off using the long shoulders on either side of Hwy 16 so you don’t become a road hazard for others. Those shoulders are also suitable places to stop the car and take photographs.

For additional context, Jasper was 365km (under 4 hours drive) west of Edmonton and 412km (5 hours drive) northwest of Calgary.
