Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Tjaetaba Falls was an interesting waterfall that seemed to be one of the more obscure ones in Litchfield National Park. We saw this because most of the other waterfalls had dedicated car parks and signage for it. This one, on the other hand, wasn’t specifically singled out by roadside signage other than sharing the same car park for Greenant Creek. That said, we were completely alone throughout our hike to and from this waterfall. Plus, there was a swimming hole above the top of the falls so I’d imagine that this would be the place for solitude and a less busy experience.

As you can see from the photo at the top of this page, it had a pretty light flow. This was noteworthy because our visit coincided with the start of the Dry Season following a late-season cyclone one month earlier. So I’d imagine that the falls was very seasonal with its flow probably diminishing rapidly as the Dry Season would progress.

From the Greenant Creek car park (see directions below), we hiked for roughly 45 minutes each way. The walk was gently uphill leading through shady bushlands before reaching an overlook affording us a mostly overgrown view of the entire plunge of the falls. However, we then kept going on the trail towards its top, and that was where we saw a smaller waterfall backing a pretty serene and solitary plunge pool with a view over the escarpment.

The car park for the falls is at Greenant Creek. The turnoff to get to Greenant Creek is about 59km west of Batchelor on the north (right) side of the Litchfield Park Road (Hwy 30) heading west.

For context, Batchelor was 97km (over an hour drive) south of Darwin.
