About Edith Falls (Leilyn)
Edith Falls, which also was known by its Aboriginal name Leilyn, was a series of waterfalls that seemed to us to be really more of a giant swimming hole than waterfall attraction. However, as I say this, I had to admit that we only allowed ourselves to get a distant view of the main waterfall across its very wide plunge pool. There were other walks (including a 2km loop walk to the Upper Pool) that might have let us see more cascades and swimming holes along the way, but we didn’t really do this place justice given our haste to see the waterfalls in Kakadu National Park. Perhaps on a return trip here, we’ll see this place more thoroughly and better appreciate why the Aborogines thought this place was so special.
Being part of Nitmiluk National Park, we could tell there was some user-friendly accommodations (primarily involving picnicking and camping) as there was plenty of infrastructure in the form of fire pits, toilets, picnic tables, change rooms, etc. Apparently, the swimming hole here was not as prone to the crocodile danger given all the stuff they put here to invite people for a swim.
Our visit happened to be in the early morning so this west-facing waterfall was completely in shadow (as you can see from the photos). I suppose if the goal of a visit here was for taking photos, then perhaps the afternoon would have better backlighting. However, other than that, we really can’t say more about this place until we come back, relax, and spend more time here.
