Going to Falls Since 1955

submitted by Bob Foss on August 19, 2018

This post was in response to Niagara Falls: Which Side is Better?

Just returned from Niagara Falls last week with my wife. My first time was as a kid in 1955. The writers are quite correct. The Canadian side has great views, lots of places to eat and buy expensive souvenirs, and has a beautiful floral display in the gardens. The real benefit of the American side is like the writers said, you can get close-up to the Falls, and very importantly, the American side has a green, fresh, park-like approach as the whole area surrounding the Falls is the Niagara Falls State Park, and the State has invested in the park, the theatre presentation, facilities, etc. They also have built a casino just outside the park and there are a few restaurants, but it lacks the glitzy, touristy taste of the Canadian side. My wife and I live in Las Vegas so we found the American side a bit more relaxing and is family oriented, but the Canadian side is worth going, if only for the views. Interestingly, while the American Falls and Bridal Falls are entirely in the U.S., less than one-third of Horseshoe Falls is in the U.S., some reports cite only a few hundred feet. Maybe that’s why Canada refers to the Horseshoe Falls as the “Canadian Falls”. The U.S. Army filled in parts of Terrapin Point decades ago to prevent erosion, so that reduced the amount of the Horseshoe Falls in the U.S., but it is constantly eroding, so the boundary will change in the future. Enjoy both sides as they both offer a uniquely-different experience.
