There were two missing hikers in Yosemite one morning in 1970 and the rangers requested several of the more or less permanent rock climbers in Camp 4 to participate in search parties.
My party was sent down a very steep, very brushy gully from the vicinity of the Tioga Road to the base of Pywiack Cascade to check out a sighting of what turned out to be a sleeping bag in a red stuff sack.
Sure enough, the body of our missing hiker and his gear were located there at the base of the granite slab. The lone hiker had slipped and slid to his death. Unfortunately, the body had to remain behind that day until a chopper could lift it out the next morning.
Interestingly, the fuselage of a single-passenger military jet is lodged in that gully we descended. We chose to bushwhack back the way we came in rather than attempt to exit via Tenaya Creek.
