Virginia Waterfalls were a bit of an unexpected surprise considering it was a state that I knew harbored the Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains though we hadn’t visited that region yet.  However, on a business trip to the Nation’s Capital, it was a mere 15 minute drive to reach the Great Falls of the Potomac River!

So it didn’t come as a surprise that the lone waterfall we visited here also had a bit of history attached to it.  Specifically, the waterfall was a barrier to the transportation of supplies and trade goods during the early history of the United States.  And the realization of the C&O Canal (Chesapeake and Ohio Canal; one of the earliest canals built in Colonial America) made it possible to continue the Industrial Revolution in America that was taking place at the time.

Indeed, this merely opened our eyes to the possibilities of waterfalling near our Nation’s Capital, and we’re certainly keen on making a return trip to see what other waterfall surprises await!
